Recurring Schedule Status Definitions

Understanding Recurring Schedule Statuses.

The Recurrings report shows scheduled recurring gifts and their current status. Each schedule can have one of the following statuses:

  • Active: The recurring schedule is active and will attempt to run again on its next scheduled date.
  • Expired: The schedule has reached its expiration date, either set by the donor or updated by someone in your organization, and will no longer process future donations.
  • Failing: The schedule attempted to process but was unsuccessful. The schedule remains in this status for the first three failed attempts.
  • Terminally Failed: If a schedule continues to fail after four attempts, it transitions to Terminally Failed. In this state, the schedule will not retry automatically.

Common Reasons a Schedule May Fail

A recurring schedule may display a Failing status when a payment attempt is unsuccessful. This most commonly occurs when a donor’s payment method has insufficient funds, has expired, or requires activation by the card issuer.

To understand why a schedule is failing or has transitioned to Terminally Failed, review the schedule’s Audit History, which provides details about each processing attempt and any associated errors.
