Text-to-Give Overview

How donors give, manage donations, and interact with text-based campaigns.

Text-to-Give (T2G) allows donors to make a contribution quickly using their mobile phone. Donors simply send a text message with a dollar amount to your organization’s assigned number or keyword and complete their donation through a secure link. Once payment information is saved, future donations can be completed by simply texting an amount again. No additional setup is required.

How T2G Works

T2G follows a simple, repeatable flow:

  1. The donor sends a text message with a donation amount to your short code or long code number.
  2. The donor receives a response text with a secure link to complete their donation.
  3. After submitting payment, the donor receives a confirmation text and an email receipt. 

On supported devices (e.g. iPhone), donors may be able to scan their credit card to automatically populate payment details, reducing friction during checkout.

Repeat and Recurring Donations

Because donor payment information is securely stored, repeat donations are fast and easy.

  • To make another one-time donation, the donor simply texts a new amount.
  • To set up a recurring donation, the donor can text REPEAT and follow the prompts to choose a frequency such as weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually.

Refunds and Support

If a donation is made in error, donors can text REFUND to request a refund within the allowed time window. Donors can also text SUPPORT at any time to view available commands and get help during the giving process.

Text Campaign Types

Short Code Campaigns

Short code campaigns use a shared five digit number and a keyword or ID chosen by your organization. These keywords are often easy to remember, such as an organization or campaign name.

  1. Donors text the short code (for example, 52014) and include your organization’s keyword.
  2. Organizations may use an unlimited number of keywords.
  3. Short code campaigns support high volume, with up to 600 donations per minute

Long Code Campaigns

Long code campaigns use a dedicated ten digit phone number assigned to your organization.

  1. Donors text their donation amount directly to the number.
  2. Long code campaigns support up to 60 donations per minute.
  3. No keywords are required.

Text Giving Commands

T2G includes built-in commands that help donors manage their donations and account information. These commands may appear automatically during the donation flow, or donors can view them at any time by texting SUPPORT.

  • BACK: Cancel a donation before account setup is completed.
  • REFUND: Request a refund for a donation made within the last 30 minutes.
  • DONE: End the current donation session.
  • REPEAT: Start a recurring donation.
    • Before the dollar amount is texted: the donor can type REPEAT, then choose from the frequency option they prefer.
    • After the dollar amount is texted: the donor will be asked if they want to make the donation recurring and asked for their frequency preference.
  • DELETE: Cancel an active recurring donation.
  • QUIT, CANCEL, or STOP: Opt out of receiving all text messages.
  • START or YES: Opt back in to receiving messages after opting out.
  • HISTORY: Request a donation history or giving statement via email.
  • EDIT or UPDATE: Update payment or personal profile information.
  • SUPPORT: View a list of available commands and receive assistance during the donation process.
