Text-to-Give Setup and Best Practices

How to create, configure, and optimize your SMS donation channel.

Text-to-Give (T2G) allows organizations to accept donations through SMS messaging, giving donors a fast and convenient way to give using their mobile devices.

This article covers how to create a T2G channel and how to use it effectively to maximize donor participation.

Preparing Your Organization for Text-to-Give

Before creating a T2G channel, your organization must be configured with a phone number that donors will use to initiate donations.

To provision a phone number

  1. Nnavigate to Settings > Text Settings > Search Text Numbers
  2. Click Buy Number for the desired phone number.

Once the number has been assigned to your organization, you can proceed with channel setup.

Creating a Text-to-Give Channel

  1. Navigate to Campaigns > Select a Campaign.
  2. Click Add Channel > Text-to-Give.
  3. Configure the channel by entering the following information:
    1. Keyword: The keyword donors will use when texting your assigned number.
    2. Designation: The designation to which donations from this channel will be applied.

After completing these fields, select Create Keyword. The T2G channel will become active immediately and ready to receive donations.

To deactivate the keyword, use the Active toggle in the top-right corner of the channel interface.

Text-to-Give Best Practices

Choose Clear, Memorable Keywords

Select keywords that are short, intuitive, and relevant to your organization or campaign. Avoid complex words or phrases that may be difficult to remember or spell correctly.

Communicate a Clear Call to Action

Always pair your keyword with explicit instructions. For example:

  • “Text GIVE to 55555 to donate.”

Clear calls to action reduce confusion and improve conversion rates.

Make Keywords and Numbers Highly Visible

Display your T2G number and keyword prominently on event signage, slides, printed materials, and digital communications. Visibility is critical, especially during live appeals or time-sensitive campaigns.

Set Expectations for Donors

Let donors know what will happen after they send a text. For example, explain that they will receive a response with a secure link to complete their donation. Setting expectations builds confidence and reduces abandonment.

Use T2G Strategically

T2G works especially well in live or high-engagement settings, such as events, services, giving days, or public appeals. Pairing verbal instructions with visual reinforcement helps maximize participation.
