Connect your organization's PayPal business account to iDonate so donors can give with PayPal or Venmo. To accept either as a donation method, you must first configure a PayPal gateway within your account.
Before beginning, make sure you have:
- A PayPal Business account, or the details needed to create one during setup.
- A confirmed primary email address on that PayPal account.
Connecting PayPal
- Navigate to Settings > Payment Gateways > Add Gateway.
- Select PayPal.
- Click Install Gateway > Complete Onboarding which will send you to PayPal.
- Sign in to your PayPal Business account, or create one.
- Approve the permissions iDonate requests. These allow iDonate to process payments and issue refunds on your organization's behalf.
The gateway stays Pending until PayPal confirms your primary email address and that the account can receive payments. If you close the window before PayPal returns you to iDonate, the gateway still activates once PayPal confirms the account. Open Settings > Payment Gateways to check its status.
If you decline the requested permissions in PayPal, the connection fails. Add the gateway again and approve the permissions to finish setup.
Adding PayPal to a Giving Form
Once the gateway is active, turn on PayPal for each giving form that should offer it.
- Navigate to Fundraising > Embeds and click the form.
- Expand Payment & Donor Information.
- Check PayPal under the payment types.
- Click Save, then Publish.

Venmo
Venmo is offered through PayPal, so there is no separate setting to turn it on. When a form offers PayPal, PayPal decides whether to also show a Venmo button to each donor. Venmo appears only when:
- The donor is in the U.S. and giving in USD.
- The donor's device supports Venmo.
- Your PayPal account is eligible to accept Venmo.
